Meet Héctor Aristizábal: Therapist and Theatre Activist
Background
Héctor Aristizábal was born and raised in Medellín, Colombia, during a time of political unrest and violence. At 22, he was arrested and tortured by the Colombian Army, surviving due to the efforts of international human rights advocates. After the murder of his mentor and the escalation of threats, he went into exile in the U.S., where he rebuilt his life as a therapist, while facing profound personal losses—including the death of two brothers. These life-shaping wounds became the foundation of his lifelong commitment to healing and transformation.
Methodology
Héctor blends psychotherapy, Theatre of the Oppressed, and ritual practices to support individual and collective healing. His work is rooted in embodied storytelling and deep listening, often engaging survivors of violence, trauma, and social injustice. His solo performance NightWind, born from the pain of torture and loss, became a global tool for education and advocacy. Through participatory theatre and somatic processes, he creates spaces where grief, rage, and hope can be expressed and metabolized into personal and social change.
Vision
Héctor envisions a world where wounds can become seeds of transformation. His return to Colombia is part of a larger mission to contribute to the peace process through community-based rituals and ecological theatre. By weaving together the voices of ex-combatants, victims, and activists, he fosters reconciliation and rehumanization. His work invites us to face pain without bypassing it, and to recognize the “blessing next to the wound” as a path toward collective healing and regenerative futures.
